Stem Cells: What They Are And What They Do

June 12, 2020 //  by NNStaff//  Leave a Comment

New advancements are constantly being made in modern medicine. One of the latest and greatest trends for all sorts of procedures involves the use of stem cells. There has been a lot of research done on this particular topic, and yet many people are still unsure about what stem cells are and what they do. If you need a quick crash course in what a stem cell is and how it can be used to make you appear younger, here is everything you need to know:

What Are Stem Cells?

The most basic definition of a stem cell is that it is the body’s raw material from which other things are formed. Think back to your high school biology class. You probably remember learning that there are different types of cells: nerve cells, blood cells, cardiac cells, and so many other varieties that are required to keep your body running smoothly. Stem cells are responsible for the creation of these types of specialized cells.

If you take one stem cell and place it under the proper conditions that would naturally occur in the body, it divides into two to form more “daughter cells.” These cells can continue to divide and produce more stem cells. However, they often differentiate themselves and develop more specific functions such as those listed above.

What Do Stem Cells Do?

Stem cells are an important part of therapy known as regenerative medicine. This branch of medicine aims to repair diseased, dysfunctional, or injured tissue using fresh stem cells and daughter cells. The stem cells are often grown inside a laboratory setting and influenced into developing into a specialized type of cell such as cardiac cells or nerve cells. Then, they are implanted into a person to repair a defective part of their body.

Stem cells can also be used to test new drugs for safety and effectiveness. This helps minimize any harmful effects that a new-to-the-market medication might have on humans. The cells must first be manipulated to become the type of cells that the drug will target. While this does take a lot of work, it’s ultimately worth the effort.

When it comes to cosmetic surgery, stem cells can also be used for facelifts. It starts by taking some fatty tissue from another part of the body such as the stomach, thighs or lower back. The stem cells are then removed from the tissue and reinserted into parts of the face that need an improvement in volume, like around the eyes or the cheeks. Stem cells boost volume while also improving the texture and tone of these particular areas.

Improve Your Skin

If you want to have younger and fresher looking skin, a face lift in Beverly Hills might be just the thing for you. A certified cosmetic surgeon can help you use stem cells to your advantage. At the Stem Cell Facelift Center, we are ready and waiting to teach you everything we know about stem cells and how amazing this science can be for your overall health and beauty!
